Dedicated on the 97th birthday of its namesake, the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center stands at the entrance to upper campus, welcoming all to BYU. The building not only serves as a visitors center but also as an event center and as the home of the BYU Alumni Association and several other departments.
The Hinckley Center was constructed and is currently operated and maintained thanks to the generous donations of 70,000 alumni, students, and friends. The building's exterior is finished in brick and Utah sandstone quarried near Heber City.
Located on the first floor, the John Franklin Shelley Visitors Center features interactive displays about the history of BYU. It is named after the father of one of the first donors of the Hinckley Center.
